Detroit Literacy Coalition Program News

We are very excited to announce that Detroit Literacy Coalition has been selected as a Reading Works’ 2012 adult literacy partner.

Reading Works is a new nonprofit in Detroit dedicated to raising the level of adult literacy in our community. On Sunday, October 2nd a mass media campaign will begin with a special section in Sunday’s Detroit Free Press and on WXYZ channel 7 to shine a spotlight on the work of 9 established literacy agencies in the Metro Detroit area.

With the support that Reading Works will bring, we hope to expand our resources and hours in order to reach more adult learners in need. Reading Works will open the door to new opportunities for our agency, our institutional partners  and our learners.

Please buy a copy of the Detroit Free Press and turn on Chuck Stokes “Spotlight on the News” at 9:30 a.m. Sunday October 2nd to hear more about this exciting initiative. Listen for continuing coverage about Reading Works on TV and radio throughout the week and coming year.

Wayne State University iStart Program /DLC Partnership program

New partnership between Wayne State University and the Detroit Literacy Coalition -- literacy training of WSU iStart students in Fall 2008. From the July 30th article by Patricia Scott in The South End, the official student newspaper of Wayne State University:

"Wayne State will be offering its incoming freshmen an opportunity to be certified as literacy tutors through iStart and the Detroit Literacy Coalition.

The joint partnership is being done in an effort to take on the literacy crisis in Detroit.

The DLC, under the direction of Dr. Daphne Ntiri, a WSU associate professor of Africana studies, has been involved in training literacy tutors since 1985. But the effort is taking on a new dimension with the recruiting of WSU student volunteers." link to full article

DLC's DREAM SUITE designed by DLC's veteran tutors, Elizabeth Williams and Ramona Dunbar, Program Coordinator

DLC's DREAM SUITE is designed to strengthen basic literacy skills, promote computer literacy and self empowerment opportunities. Learners are engaged in this highly inspiring writing program while learning MS Word and Powerpoint. This interactive program begins with learners exploring and highlighting their childhood dream of "what I want to be when I grow up!" The goal is for each learner to create a dream book based on this theme and present it at the end of session. The idea is phenomenal because it gives learners an opportunity to tap into their hidden and/or dormant creativity to enhance learning, self esteem and personal motivation.

Past successes include instant poetry writers and entrepreneurs. One of the learners now makes and markets handmade purses for sale.

INTERNS

Several Wayne State University students served as interns in the DLC literacy outreach and learned first hand how to motivate and teach computer, reading and writing skills. The 2008 winter intern was Vivian Sanders of the Interdisciplianry Studies Department.

The DLC welcomes students seeking internship opportunities in service learning, adult education and community service administration from neighboring community colleges and universities.
